Great sandwiches, fast service, and great atmosphere.

We found ourselves making a visit to a seriously ill friend at U of M, and were looking for someplace to get a carry out meal to take with us. This was my first time in downtown Ann Arbor, and after leaping from the car, proceeded to enter to place my order. Having my friend on the phone, the young man behind the counter patiently waited while I went through the menu (twice), then took my order as I read it out.......another young lady was very kind and patient with me, and made a stressful time, and situation a bit easier to bear. THANK YOU!!!!! for your kindness and understanding. Our carry-out was completed quickly, correctly and deliciously!!! This staff knows their job well - with a dash of kindness!!!

Ann Arbor is where my love for a Potbelly sandwich grew. A short walk from our house down State street for a pretty good sandwich. It wasn't after I moved away from AA when I realized the Potbellys were everywhere. A pretty good sandwich, with great service, and generally pretty quick. The hot peppers are the secret to a great sandwich @ Potbellys.

This place gets an additional star simply because they were still making sandwiches at 11 pm on a Saturday night. After catching a show at The Ark we needed some food pronto! As we made our way from Main Street toward State Street every place we passed had already closed or wasn't serving food. We rolled into Potbelly and ordered some sandwiches and soup. The food was pretty good, this is a Potbelly remember: nothing too memorable but definitely better than edible, and sat down to warm up. Even though the place was closing down for the night, we weren't asked to leave and didn't feel rushed out and that was greatly appreciated.

I'm wavering between 3 and 4 stars... potbelly's isn't amazing, but it's pretty good, and definitely satisfies my sandwich needs when I'm on State St. When I'm working, I rotate between here and Amer's. The staff here is always very nice, and fortunately, they don't sing like I've heard them do at other locations. I usually get the wreck or the chicken salad, and always with hot peppers. I actually like the hot peppers here better than at Dibella's (although Dibella's subs are better). I do prefer Potbelly's over Subway and Jimmy John's. The line moves quickly, subs are toasty and yummy, and it's not too expensive. You'll see me here at least once every week or two.

If Chandler Bing reviewed this Potbelly's, he'd ask "Could the staff BE any nicer?" I mean seriously. Sometimes while going down the sandwich assembly line, even during the busiest lunch hour, I have to stop and make sure I haven't time-warped back to the 1950s. Everyone who works here is so. nice. They smile, they ask you how you're doing, they get your order right. I'm sure this all just part of their training schpiel, but whatever, I don't care. I'm a sucker for good service and friendly people. It's also super affordable (under $5 for most of their normal sized subs) and their shakes are SO delicious (I like the coffee shake) and way less than an ice cream shop (I think like $2.50 or something crazy like that). Call ahead and they will have it ready for you and you get to skip the long weekday line. With a smile.

First of all, amazing sandwiches and amazing smells. The live music is also great! But, what really impressed me is the service. I just walked away from this shop and could not be happier. I went through the line as usual, got my favorite (original turkey with everything of course) and even picked up a sugar cookie to use with my FREE COOKIE coupon. But, I went to pay at the register and realized I left my debit card in my other coat after a night out last night. My total was $4.66 and I dug around and could only find $4 cash. Feeling embarrassed and awkward of course, I nervously tried to give the cookie back to use the coupon to cover the balance, then offered to return the sandwhich.. but no. The woman working the register kept a smile on her face (AND was wearing a BEAT OHIO STATE button, even better) and calmly said "Well we see you all the time we know who you are!" She swiped a card, credited the whole sandwich, told me to keep the cookie, the sandwich AND my $4 and when I thanked her profusely just said "No problem! We see you all the time, just come back and see us soon!" Now that is customer service.

Two things to come here for, first the veggie sandwich on wheat. Get it skinny (bread sliced thin) and toasted with cheese. So good! Next thing is the oreo milk shake, topped with little mini oreos, how cute. Oh yea, they have cheap cookies that taste better than Starbucks! For a chain they have pretty good food. Much better than Subway anyday. Good quick service. I love how they take a credit card. You won't wait too long in general. Also plenty of seating upstairs, downstairs and outside.

Delicious food and incredible milkshakes! Great atmosphere to just hang out, read the newspaper, and wait for a little in between classes.

don't think i ever ate here. maybe at some catered U of M event/lecture that i can't remember. anyways i did however have a chocolate shake or two in my day in the aa, but specifically i would ask for it to be made with chocolate ice cream (instead of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup). it was yumness.

Good toasted subs. A little generic with the decor and sandwich options, but that's what you get from a chain that tries not to be a chain. I'm not sure if they have anything unique on the menu, although what they have is actually pretty good and fairly priced. Some of us have large appetites and their smallish subs don't always do the trick. If you're hungry, pony up for some sides or you'll just have to hit Stucci's on the way out.

Feels like your buddy's kitchen. Casual, fast counter service with a dim color scheme and a bathroom near the counter that reminds me of the old west for some reason... Staff is knowledgable, helpful for people new to the place, they guide you through the process of ordering. Their mustard is unlike any mustard I've had elsewhere, not too spicy, not too mustard like, a perfect tangy sauce. They put the optimum amount of mustard on the sandwich, too, so that you can taste it throughout without it being overpowering. I would go back just for the mustard. I also like how they serve the sandwiches, with a small paper bag wrapped around it so you can eat it on the go. They host various entertainment nights too, check it out.

I always feel weird giving chains reviews - people usually already know what to expect when they go in. But since I like Potbelly's and this store in specific, I wanted to give it two thumbs up. I am a Jimmy John's hater (a shocker, I know) and this is a great alternative. Where Jimmy John's is soggy and bland (don't deny it!!), Potbelly puts on a lot of spices and toppings that kick it up. The ingredients are pretty fresh and their bread is full-bodied instead of soggy. I usually get their vinaigrette on the subs and they are out of this world. You have really healthy options and really unhealthy, greasy options at Potbelly's, as well as lots of drinks/sides/desserts, so there really is something for everyone. It's also cheap, which is tough to find alongside good food in Ann Arbor. The Potbelly on State is getting the full 5 stars because they have really, really good customer service. Despite the long lunch lines, they get you through amazingly quickly. They go out of their way to hire the friendliest staff, and it really shows. I've never had a bad experience with them, no matter how packed they are. Love it!
(5)
Beck E.
They are so friendly here! I always get A Wreck Salad with non-fat vinaigrette (yum!). Fast service, lots of smiles. :) Got a strawberry milkshake, and it made me ridiculously happy that there were chunks of strawberries in it. So. Good. *____*

Not quite as fast as Jimmy Johns, but the sandwiches are far better. Also try their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. They could compete with Insomnia Cookies.

BEST sandwich shop in Ann Arbor. I've been here a million times - always love it. They even display the calorie counts next to everything on the menu. Also, one time I forgot my wallet and they gave me a free sandwich because they're so nice and great people. LOVE THIS PLACE!

Delicious hot sandwiches. Also, very fast service. And milkshakes! I got "The Wreck" with lettuce, tomato, oil, and hot peppers. The peppers were fresh, the sandwich was freshly toasted, and the bread was that perfect mix of crunchy toastedness on the outside and chewy breadiness on the inside. Potbelly's gets 4 stars because: 1. There is only a small selection of choices for the base sandwich. However what they do, they do well. 2. They didn't have milkshakes when I went there! So sad. 3. Nowhere near the legend of Zingerman's. But a much better location and price.

DISCLAIMER: I really don't like sandwiches very much. So it was an uphill battle for Potbelly's to win my trust. Every other storefront on State St. between William and Washington is a sandwich shop. It's kind of like how Stucchi's and Ben & Jerry's live next door to each other. Somehow there are enough non-discerning students in town with enough disposable income to keep any business that is ordinary enough from failing. Potbelly, like all of its State St competitors, seems to be doing a good job of putting Hotelling's law to use. I can't tell the difference between any of these places. Almost. Potbelly's gets to stick in my memory because they have yummy milkshakes.

Easily the peppiest sandwich shop I've ever been too. Extra impressive given it's a chain. Great people. Good prices.

If you're downtown and you need a sandwich, Potbelly's is a good option. Dibella's on Eisenhower is definitely better, but that's not downtown and Potbelly's isn't bad at all. Potbelly's has cheap sandwiches (we're talking $5 or so) that are quite tasty and are made by some really friendly people. They also have assorted baked goods that look fantastic, although I haven't actually tried any of them. True story: An African-American transvestite at Potbelly's referred to me as "the man with the beautiful eyes." Hooray!
(4)
Kathryn L.
Not crazy about the food here, but then again I've only ever tried a sandwich and a milkshake there. The sandwich tasted reheated to me, but the milkshake was great! They are definitely experts at getting you in and out in a hurry so it's a good place to go in between classes for a quick bite.

I used to eat Potbelly's on a fairly regular basis because my former employer would have it delivered pretty regularly when we had company lunch meetings. I've had both their veggie sub and the tuna sub. I'm not a huge fan- I prefer Subway for cheap subs and Quizno's or Mancino's for slightly higher quality. But, Potbelly's isn't bad. It's a solid 3-star sort of restaurant. They are a chain, but they're a pretty small one, mostly confined to the Midwest, Texas, and a few east cost locations. I probably would like the subs better if I ate them right in the store. But by the time you get them to go and get them home or to work, they get a little soggy. On the plus side, they have all kinds of great additions for your subs, including good quality mustard and pickle slices, and their wheat bread is good, much better than Subway's version. I also like their tuna salad a lot- it's a bit on the dry side, but flavorful. I always think it's better to make tuna salad a little too dry than a little too wet. If it's too wet, you can always add additional mayo, but if it's too wet to begin with, you just have a soggy sandwich.

Great little place. Sandwiches are REALLY good, and they're really cheap. The only thing was that the sandwich I got was a bit too greasy, but that's minor. Definitely will go again.
(4)
Marlarissa M.
My favorite sandwich place. Better than Jimmy Johns and Subway. They don't have a lot of options, but they make a damn good sandwich. I like the atmosphere of the place; it doesn't feel like a chain to me.

Great sandwiches and friendly staff make for good times at Potbelly's. The Wreck is my favorite sandwich & they make a killer Oreo shake. The only complaint from this NJ native is that they didn't have vinegar as an option.

shannon r.
The "wreck" is fine, it's cheap and fast. I went here for the first time recently and was stunned at the (cheap) price when the cashier rung me up. $5.60 for a sandwich and chips? Ann Arbor prices being what they are, I was definitely expecting it to be about twice as much. That was a nice surprise, but given the proximity (and better quality) of Amer's I'll probably never go back here again.
(3)
Steven S.
I love their sandwiches and the service. Everyone is super friendly. The sandwiches are small but are very filling for their size. Unfortunately, one sandwich doesn't do it for me. If it was slightly bigger I might be inclined to give this place 5 stars. I also like their milkshakes. They've got more room to dine in than other sandwich places on campus so that's another plus. Sometimes there are long lines so service can be slow when it's busy.

Customer service is as delightful as it gets. They definitely train their employees well: I've never had a rude or unpleasant experience with the staff. The food can get pricey for a big sandwich, chips, soup, and a drink: around the ballpark of 15 bucks. But, sometimes their Hooked Deals give you great savings, and their food has been consistently delicious (as far as it goes for chained-food establishments.) Why not 5 stars? Well, I docked a star off because I don't like how the cashier, who was correctly gloved, was able to handle my food and cash at the same time. For example, my cashier was busy packing my sandwich up, getting my soup, getting my cup, and handling my cash, all with the same gloves and did not replace them. It might be a one-and-done thing by a new employee, but it's a sanitary issue that caught my attention. All in all, though, really delicious, friendly, and an enjoyable experience that is highly recommended!

When I lived in the Midwest, I used to crave the Italian-style subs that are easily obtained in East Coast pizzerias. Potbelly's doesn't quite fit that bill, but it comes reasonably close while also being delicious and affordable. I like that the subs are toasted, and I like the array of toppings you can get. The hot peppers are definitely hot and sometimes greasy, depending on how much of the oil the sandwich maker grabs from the jar, so I don't always get those. One thing that I don't like as much is how if you get catering, most of the toppings come on the side. While I understand the philosophy here, it results in a dry sandwich. This particular Potbelly's location has live music sometimes, which is both weird and nice. Every time I've been there during music, it's been fairly mellow.

I know it sounds super lame but one of my favorite things here became the toasted PBJ. PB gets all melty and gooey and yummmm and the bread is nice and crunchy. Yum yum in my tum! --The staff was always very friendly. --Good selection of sandwiches for adults/kids and carnivores/vegetarians --They have a fun selection of pop and other drinks. --THEY HAVE MILKSHAKES (and ice cream, but who the hell wants the ice cream WHEN THERE ARE SHAKES) --Great location right on State and Liberty --Good amount of seating upstairs and down Overall, a great option for grabbing a quick lunch in between classes, going for a bite before hitting up a movie at the theater, or just hanging out with friends! I recently spotted a Potbelly's in Boston (where I am now) and was THRILLED. Time to take a walk down memory lane and into Potbelly's! Mmmmm.

Abigail stauffer plays here every once in a while. I like that they have live music and encourage local artists to perform. Last time I was here a guy was playing the guitar and singing; he wasn't too bad. Sandwiches are all right; the milkshakes are what I come for. Try the oreo flavor.

When you need a hot meal, with fresh ingrediants and fast, this is the perfect place to go. I've never had a bad sandwich and they're really fast at serving. Off one star for being kind of on the high side for lunch.

great sandwich place. the sandwiches can afford to be bigger though. i can usually stomach two of these and i'm a small dude if that serves as any benchmark for you. there's a small seating area downstairs and a bigger one upstairs that offers you views of both the michigan theatre and state theatre. tip: ask for all of their condiments, but tell them to ease up on the oil or it just makes your sandwich a bit soggy and messy

awesome sandwich place. the hot peppers here are amazing and since they added the "large" size for like 1 dollar more, this place is even better. Personally i like the pizza sub, but all of them are really good and the staff is friendly + the line moves very quickly. If you are in downtown aa and you want a sandwich this is the place to go

Good: Mediterranean sub one of my favorite fast lunches. It's warm and toasty with artichokes, hummus, cucumber, feta, and red peppers; I always add hot peppers, as well. The ice cream and cookie selection is actually really good, so you can get a cheap sugar fix if you're studying in the evening. Bad: They only have one vegetarian sub unless you cajole them into customizing one. Salads, soups, and side dishes are all low quality and overpriced. The weekday live music is akin to torture. When it's just the radio, it's always too loud and playing bad songs. There aren't enough chairs, but I guess I always get it to go anyway. They have a ton of employees, most of whom are slightly confused and not very friendly.
(3)
Karissa K.
I love their sandwiches and drinks, and their employees were very friendly. There are a bunch of little things that make it friendly there from the employees to the little shortbread cookies they put on your drink straws. If you go in the summer months I highly suggest their raspberry lemonade smoothie. Perfect place for lunch.

I can't help but love Potbelly's. They're always catering at my business, so I get tasty leftovers every now and again on the table of sharing in the lunchroom. What I gathered was that they had tasty sandwiches, especially the turkey! Finally I went to their Arborland location and was totally blown away! Was really cute and quirky in decor, and really enjoyed the booths! (especially the Monty Python poster) I got a mediterranean salad and was so so so yummy. I got the fat free dressing, and they gave croutons in a little cup for free when I asked! Overall, a really great chain :)

Great sandwiches and friendly staff make for good times at Potbelly's. The Wreck is my favorite sandwich & they make a killer Oreo shake. The only complaint from this NJ native is that they didn't have vinegar as an option.

Mmmmm.

It's a chain, but it's GOOD! Here's why: Fresh sandwiches that are totally customizable Friendly, peppy, happy local staff Efficient system Ice cream and shakes!!! Chips, cookies, deliciousness galore Decent decor and fair amount of seating

Great sandwiches, before or after the game. I definitely recommend this place. Try the pulled pork

Pretty much sucks. Too pricey and too little product. Not in my plans to return here, ever.
